A Delightful Lunch with One’s Word Team

The One’s Word Team in Manila received a visit from One’s Word CEO, Yuki Matsuoka on June 12, 2013. It was a delightful lunch at the Watami Casual Restaurant at the New Glorietta Mall, Makati City. Most teachers based in Manila were able to meet him and had a chance to talk one on one for updates. Real Life Foundation representative, Lyn Nawata, was there to join the team and give an update regarding the partnership that One’s Word has with Real Life Foundation. One’s Word Online now supports a total of 6 scholars. Credits to the efforts of the One’s Word teachers and the One’s Word students’ monetary support to help send Filipino underprivileged students go to school, of course, to Matuoka-san who pushed for this partnership to happen.

Teachers Beejay, Kristin and Shawie also shared their fond experiences meeting and greeting students all across Japan.

Thank You Matsuoka-san for the opportunity. More power to you and to One’s Word.

Challenges in English

WHY ENGLISH IS SO HARD

We’ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!

Let’s face it – English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren’t invented in England.
We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, we find
that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea
pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t
groce and hammers don’t ham?

Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend. If
you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do
you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be
committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?
We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.
We have noses that run and feet that smell.
We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.
And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise
man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your
house can burn up as it burns
down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out,
and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

And, in closing, if Father is Pop, how come Mother’s not Mop?

That’s all for now.

Smart Quotes from Students Vol. 1

Im amazed by how far our students have gone in terms of embracing the ‘going global’ idea.  First they are really giving an enormous amount of dedication in learning the English language.  Second, they have learned to embrace confidence in sharing their own convictions on various topics whether in politics, health, culture, business or even entertainment.

Recently, Japan just held their national elections.  There were various thoughts and reactions regarding the results and my students were very open in sharing their insights on this.  It was quite timely that we prepared a material about Vugar Huseynzade, a 21-year old video game player who was chosen to become a football manager over a hugely experienced French footballer.  We took time evaluating and defining good leadership and Im very proud of how my students responded with sharp, well articulated answers!

Here is a list of my favorite quotes from my students. Im so proud of how they have reached a level of sophistication in the way they communicate!

On Leadership:

A good leader is someone who can listen to various voices and opinions, flexible yet has a strong heart.

A good leader makes it easy for his people to work for and with him.

A good leader must be a good communicator and must be able to build good relationships with his people.

A good leader must be calm and doesnt easily get angry. He should be able to make sound decisions.

A good leader is someone who puts his words into action.

My friend has failed & cried many times but she gets up and tries again. I think she’s a very strong woman.

What is your opinion of a good leader? What characteristics should a good leader possess?

Here are patterns to help you communicate your thoughts:

A good leader must be _____.

A good leader should _____.

A good leader is someone who _____.
